The World, the basics haven't changed at all from the Streets of Rage series. The trouble with the beat-em-up genre is that we've seen it all before. And if you can beat Matthew with a well-placed throw of a beer cup, all the better for your self-esteem. While Scott can pull off some pretty sweet kicks and punches, Matthew can call forth a half-dozen flying hipster chicks (AKA harpies) who throw fireballs into the mix. The E3 demo ends with the first boss battle of the game as Scott and friends take on Ramona's first evil ex-boyfriend, Matthew Patel. I didn't have the chance to get a good look at the stats breakdown, but at the very least, you will benefit from kicking a lot of butt and collecting the coins that spill out of enemies. Though there is a menu to browse in shops, you'll be purchasing different snacks to nom, each of which has different affects on your stats. These moves are unlocked as you level up (achieved by a combination of kicking the crap out of people and spending some coin in nearby shops). As I said earlier, each character has his or her own set of moves. Nothing quite like beaning your buddy in the face with a basketball a few times. This doesn't do any damage, but it sure does annoy them. You can also throw things at your friend. And yes, you can pick up and toss your friend for a team-up attack. You can also pick up plenty of weapons such as bats, recycling bins, and snowballs, which adds to the Streets of Rage vibe. When the crazed Doberman pinchers came running at me, I knew there would be plenty of different things for me to punch and kick. Nothing really changes (you still do your standard beat-em-up stuff), but it's nice to see so much variety in a genre that's usually very stale. In just one level, there were about a half-dozen different types of enemies. Though the first level is clearly just a warm-up, it shows off a lot of the potential in Scott Pilgrim vs. But after playing one level, it sure feels like Ubisoft Montreal got this right. Look, I'm a big time Scott Pilgrim fanboy, so pardon my excitement. It's wild stuff that fits perfectly into what a Scott Pilgrim fan would expect, but which will probably surprise (or shock) and hopefully delight newcomers.

Get all four players together and you rock out with a full performance, laying the thunder down on nearby enemies. But if two players get close and both taunt, they will whip out instruments and start playing a song. Another fun one is holding down the heavy attack button to perform a taunt. The subspace really is a shortcut through part of the level. And in the first level, that means a colorful rainbow walkway with giant piggy banks hopping around waiting to be destroyed so you can collect their precious coins. If all players walk up to it - BAM - you are now in subspace. In the E3 demo level, there's a door marked subspace. In the comics, at one point, Ramona shows Scott a shortcut through subspace (helpful for delivering Amazon packages quickly). Side-scrolling brawlers are easy to "get" and having the adorable characters running around the screen, tossing recycling bins at punks' faces, makes for a high-quality experience." -Ryan Clements, VirginLet's take subspace for example. I never read the comics and I obviously haven't seen the movie, but the game made total sense. What makes Scott Pilgrim stand out is its playful art style (which looks exactly like the comics), its silly animations (gotta love Kim's bulging eyes when she is kicking ass), and its fearlessness in offering almost non-stop off-the-wall, over-the-top moments. There's a quick and a heavy attack, a block button, double-tap forward to rush, and on and on. It's really nothing we haven't seen before. Each has their own set of unlockable moves as well as a unique super attack and the ability to call in a striker (for a momentary assist). You choose one of four playable characters (slacker-hero Scott Pilgrim, dream girl Ramona Flowers, badass Stephen Stills, or insane drummer Kim Pine). Enter Pilgrim's Crazy World The controls are simple. That's because Scott Pilgrim looks great and plays great. The World doesn't look like your typical comic book or movie-licensed game. A side-scrolling beat-em-up similar to Streets of Rage (but with a higher dosage of WTF?!), Scott Pilgrim vs. The catch? In order to date Ramona, Scott must defeat her seven evil ex-boyfriends.

The basic premise is that Scott Pilgrim (perhaps the biggest loser Toronto has ever seen) has fallen in love with Amazon.ca courier Ramona Flowers.
